iPhone 3G, pros and cons
It FINALLY came, what a relief! The phone that I have been waiting for for just about three weeks now. The 3G iPhone is finally here. I just finished watching the Keynote address through the Apple podcasts, and have made up my opinion on the news. And now that everyone has had a day to sift through the 3G iPhone news and make up their minds. it’s my turn to let you know what I think. I know you are dying to know, so let me chime in along with everyone else in the world. First we’ll go through what I like. So the first and probably the best thing about the new iPhone is the 3G network! If you have ever used a now “old” iPhone over EDGE you know that the network isn’t the quickest thing out there. Wifi was great on the iPhone, but once you were out in the wild without a wifi connection you had to use the moderately fast EDGE. Now it wasn’t all that bad, I often used the locate feature on google maps over EDGE and I had decent results. But now that the 3G network is on the iPhone everything is going to be much, much faster. If you watched the Keynote they compared 3G to EDGE and it was 2.8 times faster surfing the internet. I have heard the news though that the 3G unlimited plan is $30 dollars, which bumps up my iPhone plan from $30 dollars a month to $40. $10 dollars seems worth it to me to add that kind of speed. Like Steve Jobs said the 3G speed is approaching Wifi, and if I can have wifi speed wherever there is 3G I will gladly accept the price tag. If you are wondering I do indeed pay my own cell bill. I am on a family share plan so my line is $10 dollars a month, plus the $20 dollar iPhone plan making my monthly bill $30 dollars. It seems now that my bill will be $40 a month. I think I can work hard enough and save my money to spend an extra $10 dollars. haha Second, GPS is finally on the phone! They had sort of added a cell tower location feature in Google maps but now it’s the real deal. At first I was a little worried as it didn’t provide you turn by turn directions, and only functioned as the old one did. It gave you your location and if you searched for items such as food or a theater it would give you their locations as well. But already the next day TomTom has announced they are bringing their software to the iPhone. One reason I am pumped for this is that I love traveling, when gas doesn’t drain my bank account, and now I will only have to purchase the app from the app store, instead of buying the iPhone as well as a GPS unit. Hopefully their app is decently priced and not similar to buying one of their units, lol. Like I was saying though is that this has been one of my dreams for the iPhone, I imagined using it exactly for this purpose. Mounting it on my dash and using as a turn by turn GPS, now it will finally happen! It will help me save gas as I won’t make as many wrong turns trying to find something, and that’s always a good thing. The third and my favorite thing about this announcement is the PRICE!! $199-$299 for the iPhone! I can’t believe this, as I had heard the rumors of it being cheaper but didn’t think it would be quite this cheap. I was expecting the low end model to be $299. This is great news to me as well as I will either purchase the low end model and pocket $100 dollars from selling my old iPhone, or use it to get the top of the line model at equal cost to me. Going from 4GB to 16GB sure is tempting as I won’t be spending any extra money, but also pocketing $100 dollars is quite nice. I’m still weighing in on this decision so I’ll get back to you on that one. The fourth thing we have already known about since march and that is the App Store. This is going to be a great feature for ALL iphone owners 3G or not. I for one can’t wait to see what developers have in store. I know I will already be getting the IM app and TomTom app. I’m sure that there will be twitter apps, and wordpress apps that I will get as well, among other things I can’t even think of right now. The loopt app they showed during the Keynote seems pretty awesome so I might check that out as well. I can’t tell you how important the 3rd party apps will be to this phone. This was probably the biggest complaint at first when the iPhone was launched besides the EDGE network. It’s going to be great to have the same developers that develop for OS X making their apps for the iPhone. Alright now here are a few things that I am disappointed on. First is the rate plan increase, I’ve already decided to stomach the $10 dollar increase but I still was wishing for 3G to cost the same as 2G. Just a little wishful thinking. The video conferencing didn’t happen and that was a far stretch but it could of been a great feature of the phone. Definitely not a deal breaker for me though. Honestly it wouldn’t be used that much, but when it did it would be fun. I always have my iSight though to keep me company. I was hoping that Apple would talk about their computers a little bit too during this keynote but I knew better. This conference is all about developers so their consumer announcements will be held off until Macworld or another announcement. I am really excited for a redesign of the Macbooks, I would love the look of the Macbook Air in a Macbook mainly just because of the price of a Macbook. I have found a buyer for my Macbook Pro, which then I will be upgrading to an iMac and the new Macbook if they are redesigned with aluminum. If not I’ll be saving a little more for the Macbook Air. In reality I don’t have many complaints about the iPhone 3G. It is a valid upgrade especially since I’m getting more in my phone and also potentially pocketing $100 dollars. I think some people believe too much of the rumors and then expect it to happen. It’s impossible for Apple to add everything that you want, but people still get soo pissed at them for not adding it and start hating Apple for not being perfect. If you look at it realistically Apple is doing a great job of hearing customers complaints and fixing them. I love that the headphone jack is no longer recessed, and that is proof that Apple listened. They have 3rd party apps, 3G, and GPS, the biggest requests for the iPhone are now there. The only thing missing to me now is copy and paste, and perhaps MMS, but I’ve only received ONE MMS message in the last 3 years. That shows you how usefull they are, to me atleast. I just wish it would have been available starting yesterday!! ARGHH So now that I took the time to type this up, it’s your turn to tell me what you think about the iPhone 3G. Will you be buying it? Which one? Excited or disappointed, LET ME KNOW! By the way, since the iPhone isn’t released until July 11th I’m starting a new series. I haven’t named it yet but the first post will come on the 11th and being to countdown the LOOONNGGG month until it’s launch. Alright that is all for now!! Leave me some comment love. |
